The History of Cheesesteak Sandwiches
The cheesesteak sandwich was born in South Philadelphia in the early nineteen thirties. Brothers Pat and Harry Olivieri ran a hot dog cart when Pat decided to grill thin sliced steak and onions for his own lunch. A passing cab driver smelled the steak, ordered one, and told Pat to start selling them instead of hot dogs. The story is detailed by National Geographic.
At first the sandwich had no cheese at all. It was simply steak and onions on a roll. Provolone was added years later and helped turn the sandwich into what we now recognize as the cheesesteak. Tasting Table explains that cheese came into the story later.

Today the cheesesteak sandwich is one of the most searched comfort foods in America, especially around lunch and dinner time when people are looking for something hearty and satisfying.

What began on a street corner quickly became a symbol of Philadelphia. The cheesesteak is now a staple inside sports stadiums across the city. At Eagles, Phillies, and Flyers games, fans line up for cheesesteaks as eagerly as they do for tickets.

And in true Philly fashion, the sandwich even earned a world record. In Lewiston Idaho a team created the longest cheesesteak sandwich ever made, measuring more than seven hundred feet long.
